    Nearly all elevators travel up and down.  Elevators are great
    inventions, but they could do more for us.

    A 2-axis elevator could take you up and down, but also left and
    right, or forward and backward.  An elevator grid would have to
    be built into the side of the building, but it would be worth
    the space.

    The panel of buttons would look like a grid as well.  It would
    be easy to get to the right locations, because you would just
    have to press the button labeled with the appropriate room
    number.

    Such an elevator would be useful for hospitals, labs, and places
    where heavy things have to be moved around frequently.
